Trip Introduction

Spirit of Bhutan tour provides an in-depth view of the ancient way of life and rich culture that still thrives in Bhutan today through the western valleys of Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and Wangduephodrang. It is a well-paced tour, designed to provide the opportunity to savour the unique highlights of Bhutan’s western districts.

 

It offers diverse mountainous landscapes, a rich Buddhist heritage including monasteries, temples and chortens. Historical fortresses and extremely hospitable people. Moreover, you will discover the vibrant history of Bhutan visiting the Ta Dzong Museum, Rimpong Dzong with its wooden cantilevered bridge and the infamous Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) in the beautiful Paro Valley in Spirit of Bhutan Tour.

 

In Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, you will visit The National Memorial Chorten. 12th-century Changangkha Temple and the National Library exhibiting ancient scriptures. Before crossing the 3050m Dochula Pass with its 108 chortens, numerous prayer flags and spectacular Himalayan views. The sub-tropical Punakha Valley featuring the incredible Punakha Dzong and Chimi Lhakang, the temple of the ‘Divine Madman’. There are also optional day excursions to Tango and Cheri Monasteries in Thimphu. A day tour of the beautiful Haa Valley is available as part of this tour.

  • Day 1

    Kathmandu Arrival (1360m)

    You will be warmly greeted by well Nepal at your arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport Kathmandu. Our representative will picked up you and about a 45 minute bus journey to the heart of the city and check in to Hotel there is time for a cup of tea, shower and then a chance to see the tourist district of Kathmandu by night as we go for dinner before an early night!

  • Day 2

    Kathmandu Sightseeing (1360m)

    This is your Kathmandu sightseeing day and preparation day too. You will visit Kathmandu Durbar square, a in-creatable wooden house, palace and temple,(a world heritage site) and Swayambhunath (a world heritage site) which a Buddhist stupa and Monastery, which over 2000 years old and one of the oldest in the world. Here is a great chance to see across the valleys, see some monkey and begin to learn about this fascinating country. If you need anything before heading out then you have to shopping on this day. Here is short briefing about trip in given and pre tour discussion is done with your leader and members. Feel free to ask any questions regarding your tour.

  • Day 3

    Kathmandu - Paro – Thimphu

    The flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular mountain flights in the world, with a constantly changing panorama of some of the highest mountains on earth. Our Bhutan Travel Bureau representative will meet you at Paro airport exit doors following customs formalities. After lunch enjoy afternoon sightseeing around Paro, including a visit to the Ta Dzong Museum housing many religious relics, works of art and handicrafts offering a great orientation into Bhutan’s historical, cultural, and religious past. Next, visit the Rimpong Dzong to see the painting of the great saint Milarepa, considered as the master of meditation by the Bhutanese and believed to have attained enlightenment in a lifetime. Dzong’s are large monasteries and district administrative centres, which were once strategic forts. Afterwards, drive to the capital, Thimphu (1.5 hours) following the Pachu River. Before dinner at the hotel there will be an orientation on Bhutanese etiquette by your guide. Overnight at your hotel in Thimphu.

  • Day 4

    Thimphu

    Once a rustic village sitting in a broad, fertile river valley, Thimphu is today the nation’s bustling capital. Enjoy a full day of sightseeing, including a visit to the National Memorial Chorten depicting the Buddhist faith in the form of paintings and statues. This temple was first initiated by the Third King as a protection from the negative elements of modernisation, and as a monument to world peace. The Royal Queen Mother completed it as a memorial stupa for the Third King who passed away in 1972. Continue on to 12th century Changangkha Temple and Drubthob monastery housing the Zilukha Nunnery. If your visit to Thimphu coincides with the weekend, you can walk through the Thimphu Market to see the variety of food of Bhutan, including basket upon basket of fiery chillies, fresh cheese and a variety of fresh greens. In addition, many stalls contain Bhutanese handicrafts and household items. (This market is open only from Friday until mid Sunday). Overnight at your hotel in Thimphu.

  • Day 5

    Thimphu

    Continue sightseeing in Thimphu. Visit the School for Arts and Crafts where students are taught the 13 types of Bhutanese art, The National Library housing the collection of Bhutanese scriptures dating back to the 8th century, the Traditional Paper Factory displaying the Bhutanese paper making process, and a fascinating replica of a medieval farmhouse at the Folk Heritage Museum. If there is time, you may visit the nursing pen for the Takin, the national animal of Bhutan, and Tashichhodzong, ‘the fortress of the glorious religion’. Initially erected in 1641 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it was rebuilt in the 1960s during the reign of Bhutan’s third king in the traditional style, without plans or nails. Tashichhodzong houses some ministries, His Majesty’s secretariat, and the central monk body.Other options for the day include a hike to Tango and Cheri Monasteries (45 mins), two of the most ancient monasteries in the Thimphu region or a hike to Phajoding Monastery providing a splendid view of Thimphu valley.   • Day 6

    Thimphu – Punkha

    Drive over the Dochu-La pass (3,100 meters), which on a clear day offers an incredible view of Himalayan peaks before descending into balmy Punakha valley (about 3 hrs total driving time). The drive through the countryside affords a glimpse of everyday life in this most remote of Himalayan kingdoms. In the Dochu-La area there are vast Rhododendron forests that grow to tree size and bloom in late April/early May covering the mountains in a riot of glorious spring colour. Punakha was the ancient capital of Bhutan. On arrival, visit Punakha Dzong, the “Palace of Great Happiness” built in 1637 by the Shabdrung, the ‘Unifier of Bhutan’ as predicted by the great Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava). It is situated at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu (Mother and Father Rivers) and is the winter headquarters of the Je Khenpo and hundreds of monks who move en masse from Thimphu to this warmer location. The three story main temple of the Punakha Dzong is a breathtaking example of traditional architecture with four intricately embossed entrance pillars crafted from cypress and decorated in gold and silver. It was here on 17th December 1907, Bhutan’s first king was crowned. Overnight at your hotel in Punakha/ Wangduephodrang.

  • Day 7

    Punkha

    In the morning drive to Yabesa village and hike to through ricefields and up to Khamsum Yueley Namgyal Chorten, built by her majesty the queen Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuk. Perched high on a hill on the bank of the river, the Chorten houses paintings belonging to Nyingmapa Traditions.Take a picnic lunch on a picturesque riverside before exploring Wangduephodrang Dzong. Built in 1639, the strategically located Dzong is perched on a spur at the confluence of two rivers. In the 17th century Wangduephodrang played a critical role in unifying the western, central and southern regions of the country. Afterwards drive back into the Punkha valley for a short walk to Chimi Lhakhang, temple of the Drukpa Kuenly who is also known as the Divine Madman. He inherited the Divine Madman title since he revolted against the orthodox Buddhism in his time. He taught the people that religion is an inner feeling and it’s not necessary that one should be an ordained monk. He is also considered a symbol of fertility and most childless couples go to his temple for blessing. Overnight at your hotel in Punakha/ Wangduephodrang.

  • Day 8

    Punkha – Thimphu – Paro

    Drive back to Thimphu where you will have an opportunity to visit handicraft and souvenir stores. Afterwards proceed to Paro, visiting Semtokha Dzong en route. The Dzong, built in 1627, is the oldest in Bhutan. It now houses the Institute for Language and Culture studies. On arrival in Paro, check into the hotel. Overnight at your hotel in Paro.

  • Day 9

    Paro

    After breakfast hike to Taktsang Monastery. The trail is broad and the walk of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours uphill takes you almost a kilometre above the Paro valley floor (for those who cannot hike we will arrange a horse for transfer up to cafeteria). The view of Taktsang Monastery built on a sheer cliff face 900 metres above the valley floor is a spectacular sight. The Monastery is also an important pilgrim site for the Buddhists. The great Guru Rimpoche is said to have flown here on the back of a tigress when he brought the teachings of the Buddhist Dharma to Bhutan in the 8th Century. He then mediated in a cave there for three months where the monastery was later built. The cave is said to be the origin of Buddhism in Bhutan. Nearby there is a teahouse where you can stop for refreshments before returning to Paro for lunch. In the afternoon drive to the ruins of the 17th Century Drukgyel Dzong, an historic monument built by the Shabdrung to commemorate his victory against invading Tibetans in 1644. In fine weather the towering peak of the sacred Mount Jomolhari (7314m) appears as a stunning backdrop. On the return drive to Paro, visit 7th Century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples constructed by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. Kyichu is built in a manner similar to the Jokhang in Lhasa. Inside there is a great golden image of Buddha Shakyamuni. Alternatively, day 9 could be spent on a day trip to the Haa Valley, one of the most picturesque districts in Bhutan. Reached via the beautiful Chelila Pass, Haa Valley is characterised by its surrounding rugged and mountainous terrain. Overnight at your hotel in Paro.

  • Day 10

    Depature from Paro Aiport to Kathmandu.

    After breakfast our representative will help you with the exit formalities and bid you farewell. and in Kathmandu will be our representative to picked you at hotel.

    Free Day in Kathmandu

    Today is your free day at Kathmandu you are free to enjoy any of the services and facilities at Kathmandu like sports, Game, shoppings, restaurant and bars and get your beloved and close one a memory of Nepal. You will be organized a great Nepali Dinner program with your crew memember and them. Enjoy

Equipment Check – List

 

What clothing and equipment to take is one of the things that people worry the most about!  We can advise you and help you and it does, of course, depend on the time of year, the area, the altitude and how many days you are trekking/climbing. When you arrive in Kathmandu we will go through all your equipment to ensure that it is correct for your trip. In Thamel (the tourist area of Kathmandu where you will be staying) there is an abundance of shops selling equipment and clothing so if anything is forgotten it can easily be sourced. It is also possible to hire climbing equipment and also items such as down jackets, and sleeping bags saving you a large purchase.

 

The following equipment list is suggested and necessary for both camping and tea house  treks. Use this list as a guide line.The basic check list should help you with your packing for any of our trips. Please remember that you  should always try to keep the weight of your clothing equipment down to a minimum. Your packed trek bag,  should weight no more than 15kg. Please remember this is just a check list and you do not necessarily need to bring everything that is listed bellow.

 

GENERAL CHECK – LIST

The following  basic check list should help you with your packing for any of our trips. Please remember that you  should  always try to keep the weight of your clothing equipment down to a minimum. Your packed trek bag,  should weight no more than 15 kilograms. Please remember this is just a check list and you do not necessarily need to bring everything that is listed bellow. Use your own experience and judgment  to make your decision.

-Light and expedition weight thermal tops.

-Fleece jacket or pullover.

-fleece wind –stopper Jacket (optional)

-Waterproof  sheel jacket (preferably breathable fabric)

-Lightweight thermal gloves.

-Underwear (4)

-Shorts (2)

-Lightweight cotton long trousers / pants .

-Light and expedition  weight thermal bottoms.

-Sun hat or Scarf.

-Warm fleece hat or light balaclava.

-T- shirt (2)

-Thin, light weight (inner socks) (4).

-Sunglasses with UV protection.

-Sleeping bag rated to 0 degrees ¾ season

-Head lamp (eg petzl) Spare bulbs and batteries.

-Small padlock  to lock trek bag.

-Basic first aid kit(see First aid medicine bellow)

-Plastic bags –for keeping items dry inside trek bag.

-Daypack ( 35 to 40 litters/ 2500 to 3000 cubic inches.)

-Camping mattress, eg thermarest pad.

-water bottles.

-Tolietries.

-Small wash towel.

-Footwear appropraite to the trip.

-Waterproof  shell trousers / pants. (Preferably  berathable fabric)

 

TREKKING  CHECK LIST

In addition to the items listed in our general check list you will need to take the following on your trekking trip:

-Heavyweight gloves or mittens with a waterproof sheel  outer.

-Down vest and/ or jacket (optional).

-Fleece or wool trousers/ pants.

-Trekking/ hiking boods with spare laces.

-Thick, warm wool hiking socks (4)

– Footwear for around camp, eg running shoes and /or sandals.

-Gaiters (optional).

-Telescopic trekking/ ski poles (optional)

 

MOUNTAINERING / CLIMBING CHECK LIST

In addition to the checklists for general trekking equipment above, and depending  on the trip you have chosen, various items of mountaineering equipment may also be required, eg:

-Plastic boots and crampons (preferably step – in bindings ) with front points.

-Mountaineering  Safety harness.

-Mountaineering  Ice axe(60 to 75 cms long – depending on your height and personal  preference).

-120 cms (4ft) climbing sling and to locking and unlocking  caravines.

-Telescopic ski – sticks (optional).

-Prussik loops .

-Climbing helmet (optional).

-Jumer (Ascender & Descender).

-Pocket Knife.

-Head lamp.

-Mattress.

-Rope and Snow bars.

-Ice crew.

-High altimeter.

Most if not all of this equipment will be needed  for any  trip that  crosses steep, snow – covered  ground, or which includes sections  of glacier travel. Our recommendation that you take no more than fifteen kilos of trekking equipment dose not include your plastic boots, ice axe , Crampons ot herness/ carabiners . During the trek, climbing hard wear will be carried separately from your personal trek bag, in group bags untill needed.

 

EQUIPMENT  RENTAL

In order to minimize your expense outlay for trekking and climbing equipment you may never use  again, equipmeent rental and buying is possible in Kathmandu. You find them lot cheaper  than you find in europe and in Usa. Shops in Thamel offer a wide range of equipment available for rent and buy. Here is some cost which give you an aidea of the cost to rent in Kathmandu.
